Homes are threatened by a fire in the Lake Shasta area southwest of Big Bend. The “Shoe Fire” stared shortly after one o’clock Wednesday afternoon near the Madrone Campground in the Sulanharas Creek drainage (formerly Squaw Creek). As of midday Thursday the Forest Service said it had burned more than 400 acres of thick timber in rugged steep terrain. Evacuated areas include Madrone, Wheeler Ranch and much of Fenders Ferry Road. Evacuation zones can be checked at Protect.Genasys.com Fire managers had estimated a 2,500 acre potential, and were working on contingency lines to contain it to that size.
