A high speed chase that started near Mount Shasta ended with a standoff on Interstate 5 in the Shasta Lake City area Sunday morning. The chase began when a police officer in South Weed tried to stop a Honda Accord for speeding on Southbound Interstate 5. Mount Shasta Police joined the chase until the CHP took over and pursued the car at up to 100 miles an hour all the way to Pine Grove, where a spike strip successfully disabled the car. Southbound freeway traffic was diverted onto the Pine Grove offramp and northbound traffic was diverted at Oasis Road during a short standoff at gunpoint until officers pulled the driver from the car. He’s apparently a man in his 20s from Utah.
