Veteran Granted Military Diversion After Altercation With Off Duty RPD Officer

A veteran from McArthur who got in an altercation with an off duty Redding Police Officer at Kool April Nites has been granted a military diversion. The dispute occurred after 62-year-old Norman Valdez had reportedly been yelling and cursing at some RPD Explorer Scouts who were directing traffic. A bystander posted a video of part of the incident online, leading to a lot of criticism toward both Valdez and the officer. Valdez ended up being charged with misdemeanor battery on a police officer. A judge has ruled that Valdez is eligible for a 24 month military diversion, which can be offered to current or former members of the service charged with misdemeanors so they can seek treatment for PTSD or anger issues. Valdez also had to write a letter of apology.
