Violent Hailstorm Hits Redding Saturday Evening

Redding has seen a variety of intense weather over the past week. That included heavy snowfall in the mountains that shut down every highway at one time or another, either by closure order or due to spun-out, jackknifed or crashed big rigs. Flooding was seen, especially in low-lying areas, and led to the closure of a number of roads, including Highway 99 in Tehama County. Saturday night another form of precipitation showed up, as parts of Redding were battered by a sudden and violent hailstorm. At around 7PM Saturday night hailstones were reported to be the size of marbles or larger. The squall only lasted less than a half hour but it left some neighborhoods covered in a thick layer of ice.
