A resident of Tehama County has died of complication from West Nile Virus, presumably contracted from a mosquito bite, according to public health officials. Tehama County Health Services Agency has not specified the area of Tehama County where the bite is believed to have occurred. Most of the time infected people experience no symptoms at all, but for about one in five cases it can be deadly. It’s fatal for about 1 in 3 infected horses, the only species for which there is a vaccine. The best way to fight West Nile is by eliminating standing water where mosquitos breed. Significant mosquito problems can be reported in Tehama County at 527-1676 or in Shasta County at 365-3768.
