Wild Geese Test Positive For The Bird Flu In Colusa County

A disease that’s dreaded by poultry producers, the Avian Flu, has returned to California. Wild Canada Geese found dead in the national wildlife refuge in Colusa and Glenn Counties have tested positive for Avian Influenza H5N1. The virus swept through most of the contiguous states last year, resulting in the intentional destruction of well over 50 Million domestic Chickens and Turkeys. H5N1 is highly contagious for domestic poultry, and scientists say wild birds should be prevented from contacting or sharing water sources with domestic poultry or pet birds. Game bird hunters are advised to use great caution by cleaning everything and avoiding too much contact with their catch in order to protect themselves and their dogs.
