A Junction City woman had to be rescued after crashing into the Trinity River over the weekend. A little before 4PM Saturday afternoon, witnesses say 39-year-old Elena Malee was driving a Nissan Rogue at high speed on Highway 299 east of Dutch Creek Road when the SUV left the road and launched into the river. Despite having a broken leg, Malee climbed out a window and onto the roof as the vehicle was swept several hundred feet downriver. A CHP helicopter was used to hoist Malee to safety and she was transported to Mercy Hospital in Redding. The CHP does not suspect drugs or alcohol, but say the crash was caused by driving too fast.
