Charges have been dismissed against a Butte County woman for the shooting death of her husband early Christmas morning. 34-year-old Julie Castaneda of Palermo had been in custody for murder until she finally told her story to investigators Wednesday. Julie and her husband, 38-year-old Carlos Castenada, had attended a Christmas Eve party, where witnesses say Carlos had been drunk and acting belligerantly toward other guests Julie insisted that they leave early and she drove them home along with their 3 children. Wednesday Julie said there had been a long history of domestic violence and that night when they got home the couple argued in their bedroom and Carlos attacked her, pinning her down, grabbing her cell phone away and putting his hands on her throat. She said she kicked him off of her and grabbed a gun she kept on her side of the bed, then fled the home. She became concerned about leaving the children in the home with him and returned. She said when she walked in Carlos was in front of the open gun safe pulling his handgun from the holster and as he advanced toward her she shot him three times in the torso. She called 9-1-1 and attempted CPR until deputies and medical arrived. They found Carlos dead and two semi-auto handguns on the floor nearby. The case has been determined to be justifiable self defense.
