An iconic book store in South Redding that permanently closed its doors in December due to flooding may have some life left in it yet. After two feet of water deluged the store on December 21st – leaving thousands of books damaged – the owner of Cals Book Store, Carl Anger, quickly made the decision to permanently shut down and the store formally closed on December 28th. But after an outpouring of community support, Cal’s Books is making a comeback according to a story in the Shasta Scout, after hearing the tragic news, 25-year old Quetza Perez was devastated. She formed a group of five people, and after meeting with Cal’s owner, began putting a plan in action to save the bookstore. The group has named itself “Cal’s Books Cooperative.” It’s operating under a unique organizational structure called a worker self-directed nonprofit. Perez told the paper this structure is a fusion between a workplace democracy and a nonprofit organization, where each employee of the bookstore acts as an equal partner to pay for the store’s repairs and revitalization, the group has opened a GoFundMe account in hopes of raising $50,000, with $40,000 to buy the business itself and the other $10,000 being used for facility repairs and incorporation and storage costs.
