The Shasta County Office of Education has announced the local winners of this year’s spelling bee. The format has changed to a written competition for the first time to make it more fair, as all the students were challenged with the same words. The elementary school winners are Rhea Little from Turtle Bay and Max Gumm from Shasta Meadows. After 17 rounds they prevailed with the word “Plethora”. The middle school winners are Bastian Adams of Sequoia and Roxanne Kidson of Montgomery Creek. After 9 rounds their final word was “Cavalier”. There were 54 elementary students and 28 middle schoolers. The four champs will compete at the State Spelling Bee next month.
