A wanted man who was chased by Redding Police shot himself, apparently to avoid capture. Just before 2 O’clock Saturday morning officers tried to stop a suspected drunk driver near the crossroads of Interstate 5 and Highway 299. The driver fled onto I-5 and led officers north all the way to Mountain Gate, then turned around and headed back to the south, exiting into Shasta Lake City. He turned onto Cascade Boulevard and pulled over to the side of the road. The 62-year-old driver than got out of the car holding a handgun and shot himself in the head. He was declared dead at the scene. Redding Police say he was under investigation by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, but his name and the nature of the case have not been revealed.
