Staffing Shortage At Shasta County DA’s Office Causes Case Backload

Due to a short staffing, the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office is being forced to reduce their case load. There’s funding for 28 prosecutors but the pay apparently is not competitive enough. After this month there will be only 16 working on cases. Even with full staffing, the office would still have only half of what they would need to handle all the cases submitted by law enforcement. The DA’s Office will prioritize cases that represent serious threats to public safety, but less serious cases will need to be backlogged. As DA Stephanie Bridgett put it, “It’s a math problem”.
