A lawsuit has been filed by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber to strike down Shasta County’s Measure B. Officials say the measure would illegally undermine state election laws protecting voters rights. It requires photo ID to register and vote. Early voting and vote-by-mail options would be nearly eliminated and ballots would be hand counted. It also would create a county voter registration system disconnected from the state system. The lawsuit was filed Friday in a state appeals court. State officials say Measure B far exceeds the authority counties have over elections. Precedent was set last year when the courts struck down a voter ID measure in Huntington Beach. The Board of Supervisors will discuss the lawsuit in closed session Tuesday.
