A Lithium-Ion battery that was used to power an off grid home in Hayfork spontaneously caught fire Thursday, causing road closures and evacuations. According to the Trinity Journal, a man and his son were able to flee the home, remove the battery, and stop the immediate fire. But after realizing the battery was still very hot they took it to a local fire station, where volunteers immediately began suppression efforts. An imaging gun showed the temperature to be 140 degrees. Residents of Highland Drive and Eskaton Manor were told to shut off their air conditioners as outside temperatures pushed past 90 Degrees. According to Trinity County Environmental Health, breathing the gas from a Lithium-Ion Battery can cause serious breathing issues including burning. All roadways in Trinity County are now open.
