First District Congressman James Gallagher has been given his committee assignments. The freshman representative will serve on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Space, Science & Technology Committee. After being elected to the seat formerly occupied the deceased Doug LaMalfa, Gallagher is currently Shasta County’s representative in Congress. At the end of the year the newly redrawn districts will take effect and Shasta County will be a part of District Two, currently represented by Jared Huffman. The Democrat took 57% in the primary and will appear on the November ballot against Republican Robin Littau, who got 11%. Gallagher was the clear winner in the special election to complete LaMalfa’s term, but to stay in Congress at the start of next year he’ll need to defeat Democrat Mike McGuire in November. The two were virtually tied in the primary with 42% each.
