Redding City Manager William Tarbox unexpectedly passed away on Sunday according to a brief press release from the City of Redding. The Redding City Council appointed Tarbox in late 2025 and he began serving as City Manager in February 2026. During his tenure, city officials said he focused on serving the Redding community while working closely with city employees, elected officials and community partners. Mayor Mike Littau said in a statement, “Our hearts are with will’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time”; adding “We are grateful for his service to the City of Redding”. The city said it would not release additional details about Tarbox;s death out of respect for his family. The City Council is expected to discuss appointing an interim replacement at Tuesday’s meeting.
Retired Police Officer Robert Schreeder is also expected to be appointed to the position of Interim Police Chief Tuesday night, replacing Brian Barner who retired at the end of June.
