The lawsuit over Measure B returns to court Thursday. The lawsuit filed by California’s Attorney General and Secretary of State is being heard in Shasta County Superior Court. The measure, which calls for major changes in how elections are run, got approval from 56% of voters, but the state says the changes it calls for are in violation of state law. The lawyer representing the measure’s supporters will now try to preserve as many of the measure’s provisions as possible, even if the whole package is not allowed to go forward. The state is trying to secure an injunction against the measure so it can’t be implemented in the upcoming November General Election. The Shasta County Board of Supervisors had already voted not to spend any money to defend the measure in court, or to take a position on it. They’ve made it clear that that includes the Registrar of Voters, though he had previously expressed support for it and some of the key supporters and authors of the measure are his employees in the Elections Office.
