Vote To Replace County Planning Commissioner Fails

For the Shasta County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Corkey Harmon placed a proposal on the consent calendar to remove Steven Kerns from the County Planning Commission and replace him with Kevin Butler, a civil engineer. There was no reason given for the move, but Kerns is a biologist and there’s been much speculation in some circles that removing him would make it easier for Patrick Jones to again seek a permit for his proposed gun range on environmentally sensitive land on Millville Plains that borders Bear Creek. Butler did some design work for the gun range project, which was defeated in a lawsuit brought by a group of Millville Plains residents. Kerns worked on the environmental assessment for the range. The attempt to remove Kerns failed to get a 3-fifths vote, as Kevin Crye had already left the meeting for a medical appointment. It’ll be addressed at a future meeting. Supervisors traditionally have each chosen their own planning commissioners.
