The Redding City Council had a difficult and necessary discussion Tuesday night about their general fund problem. 84% of general fund spending goes to public safety so painful cuts were approved, including a reduction in fire and police staff and the closure of fire station 3. Shutting that station on Westside at Buenaventura will save $3 Million. There are 8 fire department and 20 police department positions currently budgeted but not filled, and they will remain vacant. Other city departments will leave some positions vacant as well, but no layoffs are planned. Some unpaid furloughs may be considered. Without these and more cost savings, the city budget would be in a serious deficit. The council meeting dragged on for more than 7 hours.
