Young Hikers Rescued After Getting Lost While Climbing Mount Shasta

For the third time in a month, a rescue has had to be performed for hikers on Mount Shasta. Monday night at 10:20PM a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman called for help. They were in Avalanche Gulch at around 11,000 feet elevation. Temperatures had dropped to around 14 Degrees but the pair had planned for a day hike and were totally unprepared for the conditions. They were told to keep climbing down to maintain their body heat. At 2AM they called from Helen Lake just before their phones went dead. The following morning a search was launched by Siskiyou County Search and Rescue, Forest Service Climbing Rangers and a CHP helicopter. At 4 O’clock in the afternoon the pair was finally found at the bottom of a gulch miles from the trail and utterly lost. They had been hiking for 36 hours and were exhausted but uninjured.
