At Tuesday’s meeting, the Redding City Council will try to find some badly needed money to shore up a deficient general fund. One way is through an increase in Redding Electric Utility rates. The proposal is for a boost of 12%, which would occur over a two year period starting next year. That rate boost would follow a public hearing, likely to be set for November 17th. The council will also make a final vote on whether to cut funding to the fire and police departments. That controversial move would include the closure of fire station number three and the elimination of 6 police officer positions that are currently unstaffed. The public safety cuts would save the city $2.4 Million, according to the staff report. The council will hear recommendations from the Financial Advisory Committee, and they’ll take a close look at the finances of the water, wastewater and solid waste utilities. They’ll also get an update on the requests for proposals received for a management contract for the Civic Auditorium. Prior to Tuesday nights regular meeting at 6 O’clock, a closed session will include negotiations with 13 different labor organizations representing city employees.
