Shasta College Will Host Weather Balloon Station To Improve Weather Data

Shasta College is hosting a weather balloon station to fill a gap in North Valley weather data. The project is being done in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources and a partnership between U.C. San Diego and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The balloons are equipped with sensors called “radiosondes” specifically to monitor atmospheric rivers. It travels to about 82,000 feet in 90 minutes, gathering data along the way. A balloon was launched Thursday to test the system.
