The State Attorney General’s Office has issued a warning about price gouging in Siskiyou County. A state of emergency was declared in Siskiyou County by the Governor, not for the fires but for the flooding and mudslides that resulted from the effects of Tropical Storm Hilary. During a state of emergency it’s illegal to raise the price of an item by more than 10% compared to what was being charged prior to the declaration. If the item only started being sold after the declaration, the profit margin cannot exceed 50%. The law applies not only to material goods, but also to repair, cleanup, storage, hotels and rental housing. Violators can get up to a year in jail and a $10,000 fine.
