Argentinean Man Dies While Climbing Mount Shasta

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office has reported that a man from Argentina died after a fall on Mount Shasta a week ago. Three climbers had made it to the summit and on the way back down two of them accidentally wandered off the trail and got stranded on an ice sheet at the northern tip of Wintun Glacier at an elevation of around 13,500 feet. When they realized they had taken a wrong turn, they tried to slide down to re-join the trail at a lower part of the mountain but one of them lost control and slid into a large boulder about 300 feet below the other climber. He seemed to be knocked unconscious and his companion was trying to reach him for about 10 minutes. When he got about 80 feet away the injured man regained consciousness and started moving. That dislodged him from the rock and he continued sliding down the glacier out of sight. The third hiker arrived a few minutes later and called 9-1-1. Forest Service Climbing Rangers, Siskiyou County Search and Rescue and a CHP helicopter responded and the wayward man, 45-year-old Matias Augusto Travizano, was found dead near the base of the glacier. He had fallen more than 2,000 feet in elevation.
