A $110,000 grant awarded to Shasta County Health and Human Services from the California Office of Traffic Safety will allow the agency to buy child car safety seats and provide them for free to parents who are less able to afford them. Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and disability for U.S. children up to the age of 13. Using age and weight appropriate car seats greatly reduces the risk of injury, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It’s important to know how to install them correctly as well. The grant will also allow for more local car seat inspection and education events and safety technician training.
