3-Judge Panel Rules Against Challenge To Prop 50

California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement on Wednesday after a three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California ruled against a group of California Republicans who sought to block a voter-approved Congressional map. “Republicans’ weak attempt to silence voters failed,” Newsom said in a press release. “California voters overwhelmingly supported Prop 50 – to respond to Trump’s rigging in Texas – and that is exactly what this court concluded.” In a 2-1 ruling, a three-judge panel in Los Angeles denied requests from State Republicans and the U.S. Justice Department to block the map from being used in future elections. The complaint accused California of violating the Constitution by using race as a factor to favor Hispanic voters when drawing the new district lines. Newsom said the ruling upheld the will of voters, while Republicans contended the map was unlawful. The court’s decision allows the map to stand as California prepares for the 2026 Midterm Elections.Republicans are expected to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.
