84th Annual Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale Kicks Gets Underway

The 84th annual Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale is this week at the Tehama District Fairgrounds in Red Bluff. It’s the largest market for bulls, horses and livestock dogs west of the Rockies, and is vital to the beef industry in the western states. Bull sales last year set a record at $2.2 Million for 282 bulls. Bull prices averaged more than $7,800, with one Polled Hereford from Monterey fetching $20,000. 64 horses were sold, including two Geldings that went for $45,000. The average price for the 16 stock dogs auctioned was around $11,000, with one dog from Bayside fetching $23,000. Sifting and grading began Tuesday as judges and veterinarians make sure only top quality animals get to the sales ring. Thursday owners will show off their stock, and Friday and Saturday the big auction takes place. Saturday night is the Red Bluff Bucking Battle, followed by a dance party. Anything with a western theme is already being sold at the event, from handmade saddles and jewelry to furniture and livestock trailers. There’s also a western art show and auction. Tickets and more details are at redbluffbullsale.com.
