CDFW Reports 13 Cattle Losses Due To Wild Wolves In Northern California

Conflicts between wolves and cattle ranchers continue to cause stress in Northern California. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says that so far this year, there have been 13 wolf-related losses of livestock in Siskiyou County from the “Whaleback Pack”. Other reports are still under review. Collared wolves from other packs may also be active in Siskiyou County. Location information for collared wolves is available online. Biologists say Spring is an especially sensitive time because cattle are birthing calves and wolves are establishing dens. Funding is available to reimburse ranchers for cattle killed by wolves, but CDFW says they understand it does not compensate for time, stress and sustainability.
