Climber Rescued After Tumbling 1,500 Feet Down Mount Shasta

A climber had to be rescued on Mount Shasta on Sunday. The 31-year-old woman was one of three novice climbers ascending by way of an alternate route up Avalanche Gulch when she fell, tumbling from about 13,000 feet elevation before coming to rest at 11,500 feet. She suffered a broken ankle and other injuries. Forest Service Climbing Rangers were notified by Siskiyou County Search and Rescue at about Noon. Cloud cover prevented a helicopter from reaching the woman, so rescuers had to reach her by foot and carry her in a litter to Lake Helen. From there, a CHP helicopter took her to Mercy Mount Shasta. The Forest Service wants to warn climbers not to overestimate their skills when tackling a difficult route.
