County And UPEC Workers Still At Impasse As Strike Heads Into 3rd Week

Though their picket line was temporarily suspended Thursday out of respect for the nearby Fallen Peace Officer Memorial, a strike continues by hundreds of Shasta County workers represented by United Public Employees of California. The strike was set to end Friday, but the membership voted Wednesday night to extend the strike through at least Tuesday. The Board of Supervisors agenda for Tuesday includes an item for the establishment of an ad hoc committee to participate in labor negotiations, which would include two members of the board. Supervisors will also meet in closed session Tuesday for negotiations with a wide range of county workers unions.
