A Trinity County couple says they survived a bear attack outside their home, but their dog died trying to defend them. Jeff and Mallory Wilson operate a camping retreat in the Burnt Ranch area. On September 19th Jeff followed their French Bulldog Cassie outside and he was attacked by a bear. Cassie the dog threw herself between Jeff and the bear. The noise woke up Mallory and she ran outside and was also attacked. Jeff suffered broken ribs and many bite and claw marks. Mallory suffered bites and puncture wounds, as well as a broken hand. Cassie the Frenchie died of her wounds two days later. Bear attacks are extremely rare. As they recover, the couple has had to cancel guest reservations and they face medical costs. A friend has started a GoFundMe account for them.
