A tangible and significant piece of Lassen County’s history has been lost in a fire that lit up Susanville over the weekend. The old Sierra Pacific Mill on Riverside Road was apparently at one time the Fruit Growers Supply Company mill and more recently housed Nobles Construction Company. The massive fire began very early Sunday morning and consumed the entire series of large structures, leaving only smoldering remnants. Cal Fire says it was a complete loss and smoke will continue to be seen for days. Investigators are trying to determine a cause. For many people the old mill represented the golden age of logging in Northeastern California that began in the 19th Century.
