Investigators Say Smoking Materials Sparked Fire That Destroyed Duplex In East Redding

A duplex burned down in East Redding Sunday morning. Redding Fire Department was called at 6:30AM to 3543 Ricardo Avenue. The fire had been reported by someone driving by on Interstate 5. Firefighters found a single-story duplex apartment building heavily involved in fire. The six occupants were all able to escape the building without injury, but one person was treated for smoke inhalation and a dog was found inside the building deceased. Both apartments were completely destroyed along with a small amount of surrounding vegetation. Investigators determined the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials in an attached garage. The $270,000 building was a total loss. The Red Cross helped with lodging for the displaced residents.
