Large Pickup Crashes Into Several Cars Stopped For Construction On Highway 299

Major injuries resulted from a four vehicle collision in Trinity County. At around 1 O’clock Tuesday afternoon, Rebecca Helsley in a Jeep, Nancy Rich in a Mitsubishi and Nicole Ross in a Chevy were stopped for construction on Highway 299 west of Fawn Lodge Road when 41-year-old Joseph Short of Weaverville came up behind them and could not stop his Ford F-350 in time. He crashed into the Jeep, which hit the Mitsubishi and then the embankment. The Mitsubishi hit the Chevy and then went down a hill and hit several trees. Helsey suffered major injuries and Rich had minor injuries. The women, both in their 70s, were taken to Mercy Hospital in Redding. Short and Ross were not hurt. The CHP does not suspect impairment.
