With one of the highest suicide rates in the state, at nearly three times the state average, Shasta County has good reason to recognize September as Suicide Prevention Month. A key to preventing suicide is to connect with others and foster meaningful relationships. It’s good to know the signs that someone may be contemplating harming themselves, and to act on them. Experts say it’s ok to ask, and sometimes it’s just what the person needs. Local resources can be found at youmattershasta.org. A national 24-hour mental health and suicide crisis line can be accessed by calling 9-8-8 on any phone, or chat at 988lifeline.org.
