A Sacramento man who opened fire inside a Greyhound bus in Oroville in February of 2022 has re-sentenced following a Supreme Court ruling. 25-year-old Asaahdi Elijah Coleman had gotten on the bus in Redding and got a phone call that made him act agitated and paranoid. When the bus parked near the AM/PM on Oro Dam Boulevard and people started getting off, Coleman started shooting. He fired 12 rounds from a 9 Millimeter handgun. 43-year-old Karin Dalton was killed and 4 others were injured, including Dalton’s 11-year-old daughter, a 25-year-old pregnant woman and a man who was rendered paralyzed. Coleman ditched the gun and ran to a nearby Walmart, where he got into a fistfight and then stripped his clothes off. Coleman was evaluated by court-ordered psychiatrists as his defense had tried to argue that his mental illness prevented him from forming an intent to kill. The jury found him guilty of murder and attempted murder in 2024. He was sentenced in June to 74 years, but the case was reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court and sent back. His new sentence is 72 years to life in prison. The “Youthful Offender Parole” law means he’ll be eligible for parole after 25 years.
