Most Voters Likely Already Cast Ballots Ahead Of Next Tuesday’s Primary Election

The battle over control of Shasta County government comes to a boiling point in a week from today when the process of ballot tabulation begins. There’s plenty of drama in the hot races for the Board of Supervisors, with 4 of the 5 seats being contested. Anonymous smear campaigns have been launched against at least two candidates. Comprehensive files meticulously documenting the lives and conflicts of district two candidates Dan Sloan and Susanne Baremore and district 4 candidate Matt Plummer have been made public. A lawsuit has been filed against the board for a long term agreement with Redding Rancheria that, according to the suit, lets them mostly off the hook for impacts to local law enforcement and infrastructure. The agreement passed by a 4 to 1 vote, but Kevin Crye and Patrick Jones are getting the brunt of the credit for approving the agreement without consulting with County Counsel, the Sheriff, the County Fire Chief or risk management. Reverge Anselmo, who left the county more than a decade ago after losing a suit against the county involving building permits, has thrown Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars into the supervisors race by funding the Water Users Group. Their candidates include Laura Hobbs, Win Carpenter, and Patrick Jones, though Jones claims to not have any Anselmo backing. Kevin Crye’s campaign to fend off a recall has received $159,000 from Anselmo. If historic trends hold true, most Shasta County voters have already cast their ballots.
