A hearing will be held later this month in a civil case filed by a group of homeowners objecting to a correctional facility being built in their neighborhood. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office is making plans for an alternative custody campus off Eastside Road on land owned by the City of Redding. The city has agreed to lease the 90 acre parcel of land to the county. In designating the property as surplus government land, the city decided it was able to bypass an environmental review. The nearby residents of 96 homes, organized as the River Ranch Neighborhood Association, have brought a suit against the City of Redding alleging that the claim to an environmental exemption was not legal. The first hearing on the matter will be in a Shasta County courtroom April 27th.
