Governor Gavin Newsom says he is directing California Corrections officials to try to block former Colorado Election Clerk Tina Peters from transferring her parole supervision to California. Newsom made the announcement Monday after Shasta County Registar of Voters Clint Curits proposed bringing Peters into the County Elections Office. Peters, the former Mesa County Clerk, was convicted in 2024 on seven charges, including four felonies, related to a 2021 breach of her county’s election system. She was originally sentenced to nine years in prison, but her sentence was later commuted by Colorado Governor Jared Polis. Peters was released in June after serving less than two years. The announcement follows concerns from California Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, who asked the Secretary of State to closely monitor Shasta County’s plans involving Peters, particularly any potential access to ballots, voting systems or sensitive election information.
