Inquiries have been made about establishing an artificial intelligence data center on the outskirts of Mount Shasta City. The name of the company that wants to build the facility is not yet known, but they’ve shown interest in the former site of the Crystal Geyser Bottling Plant, which has been vacant since 2021 due to opposition from various groups, including the Winnemum Wintu. The tribe is already raising objections to the possibility of a data center, which would use enormous amounts of fresh water to cool its servers, as well as a great deal of electricity. Petitions are circulating to try to halt any future permitting of the facility.
