A plan has been proposed by PG&E to place another 5,000 miles of electric distribution lines underground in Northern and Central California. The undergrounding would take place over 10 years starting in 2028. The utility has already undergrounded more than 1,900 miles of powerlines and done safety upgrades on 2,000 miles of overhead lines. PG&E says placing powerlines underground reduces fire danger by 98% and outages by 90%, and they say the long term benefits are worth Billions of Dollars. The plan awaits regulatory approval by the California Public Utilities Commission.
