Phone Scammers Are Impersonating Local Sheriff’s Department Officials

The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office has recently received an increasing number of reports of a phone scam. In these calls, people are told that a family member has been booked into the local jail. The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office does not communicate with citizens by phone to request money, nor do they request any type of payment. Scammers may be referring to real people who have been taken into custody using public arrest records. The sheriffs office does not share your personal information with bail companies, or get your information from them. Also, the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office does not employ anyone named Sergeant Griffin. Anyone calling using that name is not affiliated with the agency. If you receive a suspicious call of this nature, hang up and call the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office.

In Shasta County the District Attorney’s Office is also warning the public about a recent scam involving text messages that falsely claim to be from a California court regarding unpaid toll violations. These messages may look official and often claim you owe money for a toll violation. These are not real. Do not reply, or give any payment information.
