Public Invited To Attend Annual Peace Officer Memorial Service On Thursday

The old retired Shasta County Courthouse will serve a purpose on Thursday, as the Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony will be held on the steps for possibly the last time. There have been sixteen members of Shasta County law enforcement who have died in the line of duty since 1885. The most recent was Deputy Ken Perrigo, murdered in 1991 by two men he was transporting to jail from Burney for public intoxication. Deputy Dennis “Skip” Sullivan crashed and died while en route to an emergency call in Inwood in 1987. CHP Officer George Redding was killed in 1977 after responding to a crash on Highway 273 south of Redding. Redding Police Officer Owen “Ted” Lyon was killed in 1967 by a domestic violence suspect on Gilbert Street. The ceremony takes place Thursday at Noon on the front steps of the old courthouse, across the street from the new courthouse. It’ll be about a half-hour.
