A late night pursuit that started in the Old Shasta area ended early Thursday morning in Downtown Redding. Just before 1AM, Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies tried to pull a Volvo station wagon over on Highway 299 but the driver fled westbound and stopped at the Whiskeytown Visitors Center, then turned around and headed back toward Redding. A spike strip near Lower Springs Road failed to work, but additional spike strips near Buenaventura flattened multiple tires. The car kept going at high speed toward Downtown until another round of spike strips popped the rest of the tires. The Volvo finally parked at the Shasta Regional Medical Center Emergency Room. The driver, identified as 46-year-old Robert Charles Morawitz, refused to move but he was eventually pulled out of the driver’s seat by Redding Police and checked by medical personnel before being booked into jail.
