The Redding Police Department’s three Captains will take turns as acting Chief until a replacement is hired following the retirement of Chief Brian Barner. Chief Barner spent his entire career with the RPD, starting in high school as an Explorer Scout at the age of 15. He advanced through the ranks until being appointed Chief three years ago and leading more than 180 sworn and professional personnel. Barner says after 34 years as a cop, he’s excited for the next chapter of his life with his wife and family. The city has contracted with a private firm to recruit a new Chief. The recruitment window closed Sunday and interviews will be underway. The three Captains -Brian Cole, Regan Ortega and Chris Smyrnos- will each serve as Chief until the transition is over.
