Sacramento Catholic Diocese Plans To File Bankruptcy After Clergy Abuse Scandal

The Catholic Diocese of Sacramento -which includes Redding – plans to file for bankruptcy in March following more than 250 claims of abuse by clergy and others. In a letter which was distributed to parishes over the weekend, Bishop Jaime Soto said re-organization is the only way to address the claims. He goes on to say that almost half of the claims are from the 1970’s or earlier, 80 percent from the 1980’s or earlier, and six have occurred after reforms were made after safeguards were put in place in 2002.
