The California Office of Traffic Safety says that in 2022, there were 123 people killed or injured in alcohol related traffic collisions in Shasta County. Of those drunk drivers, 59 were between 21 and 34 years old and nine were under the age of 21. With those numbers in mind, Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency has been awarded a $250,000 Safe Driving Grant. The money will focus largely on preventing drug and alcohol impaired driving among teens and young adults. It’ll also fund education campaigns for distracted driving, pedestrian safety, seatbelt and safe speed. The campaign will run through next September, concentrated on high school and college campuses and social media.
