A Shasta County School Board Member is under fire for holding multiple seats. Jackie LaBarbera was elected to the Anderson Union High School Board in 2022. Then in 2024 she was elected to the County Office of Education board, but she retained her other seat. A community member has a lawsuit approved by the state that’s pending against LaBarbera. Earlier this year LaBarbera was appointed to a third seat, that time on the Cascade Union Elementary School District Board. Another complaint has been filed that alleges LaBarbera now lives outside the Anderson Union High School District and is therefore disqualified to hold that seat. LaBarbera told Shasta Scout that she plans to step down from that seat in November, and admitted during a meeting that she’s lived outside the district since January of last year. She’s been behind some controversial decisions by the High School Board, including withdrawing from the SCOE Community Schools Grant and passing a parental notification policy concerning students who come out as trans or non-binary.
