Slide Repairs Will Delay Driver On Highway 299 At Buckhorn Summit

A portion of Highway 299 east of Buckhorn Summit will be subject to one-way traffic control while Caltrans engineers and road workers make repairs following the discovery of an unstable slope that damaged a pullout and part of the eastbound shoulder. After initial repairs began, crews found more moisture than expected and engineers re-evaluated their strategy to ensure long-term stability. A fabric material with multiple layers of base rock was used for a solid foundation to rebuild the embankment, and a permeable rock layer was added to allow groundwater to drain better. After that work was done, minor cracks were found that prompted the current repairs. Starting Wednesday, the eastbound lane is closed for about 3 weeks, with delays estimated at around 15 minutes.
