Caltrans has received the go-ahead and the funding for a major project on Interstate 5 in Shasta County that aims to improve the coexistence of big trucks and small cars. $124 Million has been approved by the California Transportation Commission for the “Fix 5 Cascade Gateway” project. When it’s done the left lane may not always be the fast lane- at some times and in some stretches of freeway it will be a truck-only lane. This is hoped to reduce entanglements with smaller vehicles due to lane changes. The expansion will require widening seven bridges. The work zone will be from Bonnyview to Mountain Gate, and it may begin as early as next Spring.
